જયદીપનું જગત

મિસીસ બ્રાઉનિંગનું આ સૉનેટ ખૂબ સરસ છે:

If thou must love me, let it be for nought

Except for love’s sake only. Do not say

“I love her for her smile… her look…  her way

Of speaking gently… for a trick of thought

That falls in well with mine, and certes, brought

A sense of pleasant ease on such a day”—

For these things in themselves, Beloved, may

Be changed, or change for thee-and love so wrought,

May be unwrought so. Neither love me for

Thine own dear pity’s wiping my cheeks dry—

Since one might well forget to weep who bore

Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby.

But love me for love’s sake, that evermore

Thou may’st love on thorough love’s eternity.

આ સૉનેટ સાથે, કવિ કાન્તનું આ સૉનેટ સરખાવો:

સખે! મારી સાથે પ્રણય કરવો, તો પ્રણયના

વિના બીજા માટે નહિં જ નહિં આવું મન કહી:

“સ્મિતો માટે ચાહું, દગ મધુર માટે, વિનયથી

ભરી વાણી માટે અગર દિલના એક સરખા

તરંગોને માટે, અમુક દિન જેથી સુખ થયું !”

બધી એ ચીજો તો પ્રિયતમ! ફરી જાય, અથવા

તને લાગે તેવી; અભિસુખ અને તું પ્રથમથી

થયો, તે રીતે વિમુખ પણ રે! થાય વખતે!

અને આવાં મારાં જલભરિત લૂછે નયન જે,

દયા તારી, તેથી પણ નહિં, સખે! સ્નેહ કરતો:

રહે કાંકે તારી નિકટ, ચિર આશ્વાસન લહે,

ખુવે તે એ પ્રીતિ, સદય! નિજ આંસુ વિસરતાં!

ચહો વ્હાલા! માટે પ્રણય જ તણી ખાતર મને:

ગ્રહે કે જેથી એ નિરવધિ યુગોમાં અમરતા!
